How to Start A Blog for Cheap!
I have to be honest with you. Starting a blog was something that I reared away from for a very long time.
I wasn’t ready for the work, I was not ready for the chance of failure, I was not ready for the investment.
However, after the success I had with my Pinterest Affiliate Marketing business, the more intrigued I became by making money online.
After viewing SO many blogging income reports I decided to take the dive into blogging.
I had NO idea what I was doing and opted into starting a blog for free on blogger, due to my fear of investing in something that would fail. That was the BIGGEST MISTAKE, I do not recommend free blogging platforms to anyone unless your blog will just be a hobby.
What I do recommend is finding a self-hosted blogging platform that works for you.
Okay so enough about me. Time for me to tell you how to start a blog for reals. I cannot promise you that you will make millions, and I def won’t tell you that it is easy and it will be set up in 5 minutes because that is just false information.
This page contains affiliate links meaning I will earn a small commission if you purchase something through my link at no extra cost to you!
What I can tell you is that I have already made back more than I what I spent to start “Get With It Mama” and I haven’t even been blogging a month!
So with out further ado here is my How To Guide To Starting A Blog-FOR CHEAP because I know what it’s like to be a broke mama.
Figure out your reason why.
Why do you want to start a blog, what do is your purpose? What do you want to help people with? Teach them how to budget? Show them how to DIY everything. This is so important to know. I know a lot of people say to start with your niche, but I honestly believe that your niche will come with time. Heck, I don’t think I really have a niche, but what I do know is that I want to help young moms and wives like me be the best versions of themselves they can be!
Choose your domain name.
This can be either your name or something fancier that you have come up with that goes with you WHY. Don’t make your domain name everythingDIY.com and only talk about finances. That won’t work.
Choose your hosting/platform.
A lot of bloggers separate this step, but since I DO NOT recommend starting on a free platform whatsoever, I am combining them. I am only going to recommend the hosting that I use and LOVE and that is SiteGround, which works with WordPress.org.
REASONS I LOVE SITEGROUND
They have three plans if you are just starting out then the start up plan is all you need!
2. Uptime is incredible!
3. Customer Service is top-notch. Like TOP-NOTCH. I had a heck of a time moving from Blogger to Siteground (because free hosting is a pain in the you know what) but Siteground was there for me through all of it, they have 24-hour chat services and my questions were answered in minutes! They also offer free transferring if you go from one hosting service to another. I cannot say enough good things about them!
START A BLOG WITH SITEGROUND
This is their landing page, super easy to navigate.
Then you need to choose your plan, this is where I suggest the Start Up plan like I stated earlier.
With this plan you get:
ALL FOR JUST $3.95 a month, paid annually. The best part about SiteGround’s pricing though, is you get that price for whatever contract length you agree too. Hosting sites like Bluehost advertise extremely low prices, but you have to commit to a 3-year contract. With SiteGround you get it for $3.95 rather you choose 1 year or 3! That is awesome!
Now we are bringing in that domain name we talked about earlier! There are two options here, you either purchase your domain name through SiteGround or you can purchase it via another website. Since I started my blog on Blogger, I purchased my domain through NameCheap, their prices are really reasonable I paid like $11 for the whole year and between then and SiteGround getting my domain pointed (tech talk, email me if you have questions on what that means) to SiteGround was easy as pie! Or you can simply just purchase your domain through SiteGround.
Then verify you’re what you about to purchase! I don’t know what all that extra fancy stuff is, maybe when I am a blogging millionaire I will opt-in, but I just went with the basics of the plan, no extras.
Then it will ask for your payment info! Hit PAY NOW and you officially own a blog!
Install WordPress with Siteground
You can have one of the tech people at SiteGround take care of this for you, just hit chat and let them know you want WordPress installed or it’s super simple to just go ahead and do it yourself.
To do so, go to Accounts and Choose CPanel
Choose WordPress from the AutoInstallers Section
Then click the blue Install Button. Easy Peasy!
On the next screen, you will need to fill out the following:
Choose Protocol: which is like HTTP://
Choose Domain: The domain is for the website you just set up on SiteGround
In Directory: Leave blank
Site Name: Just a name for you to remember what your site is called, I used Get With It Mama
Site Description: Just a brief description of your site
Admin Username: Remember this or you won’t be able to log in to your blog!!! VERY IMPORTANT.
Admin Password: Remember this or you won’t be able to log in to your blog!!! VERY IMPORTANT.
Admin Email: Your email address
Choose a theme to install: You can do this now or later. You can choose a free theme or there are lots of affordable themes out there in internet land to purchase. My advice to you on themes is to look for one that is responsive (meaning it will look good on a phone or tablet) and if you are not techy find one that offers installation services because the coding can get a bit tricky if you do not know what you are doing! I found mine on Etsy, and it was on sale at the time. I purchased it and had it installed for only $18!
AFTER ALL THAT PRESS INSTALL
Now go to www.yourdomainhere.com/wp-admin and use the username and password you created and log in!
YOU OFFICIALLY HAVE A BLOG!!!!
Download Grammarly, it will save you from so many typos and misspelled words.
Brainstorm some post ideas! And get to writing.
Choose an email provider and start growing that email list! I recommend MailerLite, I started with MailChimp, but they just didn’t do everything I needed them to. MailerLite is free up to 1,000 subscribers.
Download google analytics. You will need this if you are ever interested in working with brands or large ad networks.
Want to start making money? Download Google Adsense and join some affiliate networks.
Affiliate networks you can join are:
SiteGround (since you just started a blog with them)
MailerLite(since you just started an email list with them)
Awin (you have to pay $5 when you sign up, but you will get it back)
Just to name a few!
Create yourself some awesome Pinnable Images using PicMonkey. (735×1102 is the size that I believe is recommended, search the web for free stock photos, use warm colors, and not too many fonts, make sure it is readable! Look out for a tutorial from me in the future.)
Finally. DO NOT GIVE UP because YOU CAN DO IT.
There you have it! You just started your very own business for less than $70!!!
CONGRATS and GOOD LUCK.
